1. What is Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP)?
Ontario’s Provincial Nominee Program is called the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). As Canada’s most populous province, nearly 40 percent of Canadians call Ontario home. Ontario is also home to Canada’s capital city, Ottawa, and its largest city, Toronto. In many ways, Ontario is the center of Canada’s economic, social, and political life.
Through this program, prospective immigrants with the skills and experience targeted by the province may receive a provincial nomination from Ontario, after which they can apply for Canadian permanent residence with the Government of Canada.
2. What stream does ONIP include?
The OINP accepts applications under the three following immigration categories:
Employer Job Offer Category: for workers who already have a permanent job offer from an Ontario employer
Human Capital Category: for workers who have valuable work experience, education, language skills, and a profile in Canada’s Express Entry system; or for graduate students
Business Category: for entrepreneurs looking to start a new or buy an existing business in Ontario
The pink streams are now open for applications, the others are temporarily closed.
2.1. Employer job offer category
The employer job offer category has three streams. You must have a full-time and permanent job offer from an Ontario employer to qualify.
- Foreign Worker stream: for workers in skilled positions
- International Student stream: for recent graduates in Ontario
- In-Demand Skills stream: for intermediate skilled workers in specific sectors, such as agriculture, construction, trucking and personal support workers
2.2. Human capital category
The human capital category has two sub-categories, the international graduate streams and Ontario’s Express Entry streams.
To qualify under the Masters Graduate or PhD Graduate streams, you must have a graduate degree from an eligible Ontario university and apply within two years of getting your degree.
Ontario’s Express Entry
To qualify under Ontario’s Express Entry streams, you must have received a notification of interest from Ontario and have an up-to-date profile with your most current work experience, language tests and education in the federal government’s Express Entry system.
- French-Speaking Skilled Worker stream: for French-Speaking skilled workers with the required work experience, education and language proficiency in French and English
- Human Capital Priorities stream: for skilled workers with the required work experience, education and language proficiency in French or English
- Skilled Trades stream: for workers with work experience in Ontario in an eligible trade occupation
2.3. Business category
The business category has one stream. You must be an entrepreneur from outside of Canada who is looking to implement a new business idea or buy and grow an existing business in Ontario.
There are three streams for you. International Master’s Graduate Stream (no job offer required); International PhD Students Stream (no job offer required); and the International Student Stream under EE (job offer required).
If you are a bachelor degree student, then you can only choose the last one. However, a NOC 0, A, B job offer is a must. And it is currently closed.
If you are graduate school student, with 2 year full time diploma/degree or 1 year post graduate certificate, you are qualified for International Master’s Graduate Stream (no job offer required). There is also a language requirement of CLB7 here. This stream is currently closed.
If you are a PhD student, then International PhD Students Stream (no job offer required) is your thing. You have to be graduated and completed at least two years’ study in Ontario. If you are still waiting to finish the program, then you have to wait. This stream is accepting applications now.
If you are an agricultural or construction worker, In-demand Skill Worker stream is your best option. These are the requirements: CLB 4, with high school diploma, at least a year of work experience in Ontario in the last three years.
If you have been doing some full time office work for at least a year, and you graduated with a bachelor degree or higher, then Human Capital Trades Priorities Stream is your choice. You need CLB7 in English or French.
Your choice is Foreign Worker Stream under Employer Job Offer Category. This stream has no requirements for English or French. All you need is at least 2 years of work experience accumulated within the five years before applied. And an offer for a full-time, permanent job listed in NOC 0, A or B.
